Joseph Pilates, founder of the Pilates methods, was born in Germany in 1883. As a child, he had asthma and other ailments. He exercised to battle these ailments and became enamored by the classical Greek ideal of a man balanced in body, mind, and spirit. It is so that he developed his own exercise system on this very concept.
In 1926, Joseph immigrated to the United States, and opened a fitness studio in New York, sharing an address with the New York City Ballet. He started out by training many ballerinas and other dancers, but soon Pilates was growing popular outside New York as well.
